  1. Dubai’s gold souk must be the most competitive gold market in the world. Which my wife is very aware of. When I had a business trip to Dubai she gave me a photo of the type of necklace she’d like as a present.

Within 10 minutes of arriving in the souk I had her necklace for half the price she’d told me to pay. One happy wife.

  2. My Dad worked there on construction in the 1980s when he says there wasn’t much else apart from camels, palm trees and tracks across the desert. He’d be amazed at what Dubai has grown into.

  3. You could do a sporting top 10 as well. Let’s start with skiing in the mall! Dubai is one of the few places that you can go camel racing.

I’ve played some great golf courses in Dubai, especially at the Ernie Ells course.

I’ve watched international cricket in Dubai and wished that I’d been around for the Sevens rugby as well.

It’s only about a 90 drive across the desert for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

And I bet that I’ve missed a lot of sporting headliners as well.

  4. It’s also worth dropping into Al Seef. On the bank of the Creek is a modern recreation of what Dubai might have looked like in the 1950s.

Though this being Dubai, where shopping is almost a national sport, it’s mainly a retail experience with plenty of places to eat. It’s got an underground car park so you emerge right into the thick of it.

Fab views across the Creek and to the dhow harbour. Nice place to spend a couple of nights. Cross the creek on an abra and you’re at the gold souk in 5 minutes.

    1. You are so right about shopping being a national sport. I don’t know if they still do it but one year I was in Dubai for the Dubai Shopping Festival. The malls were so busy.

  5. Friends warn me that I’d need to take out a mortgage if I want a bottle of wine in Dubai but I’ve heard so much good stuff that I feel that I’ve got to visit, even if I can only afford a long weekend.

  6. One of my travel dreams is to get out of the city and do a desert resort. The ones I’ve looked at are fabulous – much the same as the prices!
