  1. As one of my experienced traveller friends says, if you’re going to do a safari, make it a good one! Those Sabi Sands lodges certainly look good.

  2. Nowadays safaris are not just about the animals. Quite rightly safari lodges are also teaching their guests about the local people their art, beliefs and way of life. It’s really encouraging that Sabi Sands has got the local communities and their heritage covered too.

  3. It’s the leopards that attract me. On the last safari I did I ticked off 4 of the Big 5 but no leopards. Seeing a leopard is on my safari bucket list.

    1. Sabi Sands and Sabi Sabi are definitely the place to see leopards. Usually leopards are very difficult to see but in this reserve they are far easier to spot.

  4. I particularly loved how you highlighted the unique experiences offered by each lodge. It’s not just about the luxury and comfort of the accommodations, but also about the immersive wildlife encounters and the chance to truly connect with nature. Your descriptions of the game drives and guided walks had me yearning to pack my bags and head straight to Sabi Sands. The fact that these lodges are committed to conservation and sustainability is also commendable, as it allows travelers to enjoy these incredible experiences while also contributing to the protection of these precious ecosystems.

  5. You casually drop stargazing into the middle of a list which doesn’t give it the big promo it deserves.

What you see, free of light pollution, in the Southern Hemisphere night sky really is breathtaking, so different to the murky stars that we occasionally glimpse up here in the UK.

  6. I haven’t been to Sabi Sands but I have been to Sabi Sabi. I remember the guides telling me how vital it was that the Kruger remained unfenced leaving animals free to follow routes that had been there for centuries.

  7. None of these lodges is too big. For me three suites is perfect. Somebody to have a chat and drink with before dinner and still quiet enough to appreciate the bush. The bush really isn’t a place for hordes of people.

    1. Yes, kind of. There’s the Sabi River on the southern border and also the Sand River which flows through the reserve so the name is an amalgamation of the two.

    2. Not quite the same thing but when I visited Earth Lodge at Sabi Sabi last year, the Sabie river had a lot to do with the design of the lodge.

A lot of trees used in the architecture of the lodge had been taken from the river after it had flooded.

Also out on our game drives we crossed dried up tributaries of the river which were like deep sand pits.

You can see some pics of the lodge and region here. https://www.aluxurytravelblog.com/2022/09/22/short-stay-sabi-sabi-earth-lodge-sabie-game-reserve-sabi-sand-wiltuin-south-africa/

    3. Earth Lodge is beautiful and another great luxury option. One of 4 in the Sabi Sabi lodge group, and certainly the best of the four. I highly recommend it too.

  8. Sabi Sabi is still on my to do list, even though I’ve visited many private game reserves around Kruger.
I even stayed in some of the lodges that are from the same owners/brand as Cheetah Plains (was in Madikwe) and Lion Sands (in Marakele) and they are indeed on a very high level. Looking at this list though I feel the urge to return to this wonderful area and enjoy some more safaris as I’m a big safari junkie!
