  1. As we’ve done some of the great ocean and rivercruises of the world we’re beginning to think that it could be time for us to start exploring some of the world’s great railway journeys. Plenty of inspiration here for India.

  2. Many of us who live in the UK will be getting visions of Michael Portillo and his multi-coloured trousers wardrobe.

He is British TV’s go to presenter of choice when it comes to great train rides of the world, especially anything to do with the legacy of the British Empire. To be honest though he’s probably done some of these rail journeys already as they are so iconic.

    1. Michael Portillo has been very successful at changing the British public’s opinion of rail travel with his Bradshaw books clasped in his hand.

He looks to be enjoying his travel career far more than he ver enjoyed his days as a politician.

  3. The Maharajah Express must be the journey of a lifetime. Incredible to think that you have a choice of restaurants on a train.

  4. Saying that travel in India isn’t easy won’t be giving any secrets away. It can be hot, slow and frustrating. And I’m talking from some painful experiences.

Having a luxury train delivering you to your destination is the way to go. Check in once and unpack once. It must be a dream.

  5. The Palace on Wheels is such a great name for a luxury train. In my mind Indian palaces are always so beautifully decorated and luxurious. That name is a great piece of marketing.

  6. Thank you for a very thought-provoking post. We’re hoping to visit India next year as we’ve never been before and plan to tick off a lot of major sights.

I’d started doing some research on hotels and transport. Now that I’ve read this I’m going to start looking at trains as well. It could be both far more comfortable and memorable to use some luxury trains.

  7. Travel in India is often slow. These trains make a virtue of slow travel, giving passengers the chance to appreciate how the landscape slowly changes.

In my humble opinion it’s a much better way to travel than flying in a metal tube from one city to the next.
