The top 5 luxury hotels in Oman
If you’re looking ahead and planning an escape for some winter sun then skip the glitz of Dubai in exchange for the authenticity of neighbouring Oman. There are several compelling reasons to visit Oman and here are a few key factors that make Oman a captivating destination:
Natural Beauty: Oman boasts diverse and breathtaking natural landscapes. From the rugged mountains of Jebel Shams and Jebel Akhdar to the pristine beaches along the coastline, the country offers a stunning blend of mountains, deserts, wadis (valleys), and turquoise waters. Nature lovers will appreciate the opportunity to explore dramatic canyons, hike through lush oases, and swim in crystal-clear pools.
Rich Cultural Heritage: Oman has a deep-rooted and fascinating cultural heritage. The country is known for its well-preserved historic sites, such as the forts and castles that dot the landscape. Visitors can immerse themselves in traditional Omani culture by exploring vibrant souks (markets), attending cultural festivals, and witnessing traditional crafts such as pottery and weaving. The people of Oman are known for their warm hospitality and friendliness, providing a welcoming environment for travellers.
Authentic Arabian Experience: Unlike its neighbouring countries, Oman has preserved its traditional Arabian charm. Traveling in Oman allows you to experience an authentic Middle Eastern culture and way of life. You can visit traditional villages, witness traditional dress and customs, and indulge in local cuisine. The country has struck a balance between modernization and preservation, offering visitors a unique blend of old-world charm and modern comforts.
Adventure and Outdoor Activities: Oman offers numerous opportunities for adventure and outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you’re interested in hiking, camping, dune bashing in the desert, snorkelling, or diving in the pristine waters, Oman provides a playground for thrilling experiences. The varied landscapes and diverse ecosystems make it an ideal destination for outdoor pursuits.
These factors combined make Oman an enticing destination for travellers seeking a unique and enriching experience without the high rise buildings which symbolise so many of the other countries of the Arabian peninsula. Whether you’re interested in exploring natural wonders, immersing yourself in local culture, embarking on outdoor adventures, or simply relaxing in tranquil surroundings, Oman has much to offer.

Oman is a very underrated destination, so different from the developed Arab world, the likes of Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Qatar. Which in my opinion are overdeveloped.
It is one of my favourite places for a blast of sunshine and it also retains an old Arab world charm.
Add in one of these fantastic hotels and you really have got the perfect package.
When the Al Bustan first opened my husband was invited to a conference and I was lucky enough to tag along. He spent the days in meetings and I enjoyed the grounds, pools and trips into Muscat. I think I got the better deal.
The Al Bustan is a beautiful green oasis with a backdrop of rugged hills. I’d love to go back.
Hope you get the chance to return soon!
Loved the Al Bustan but I think it’s time that I gave the Chedi a try as well. It has some reputation.
Even my friends who work in Dubai have taken to flying to Muscat for a long weekend. I think is only around an hour’s flight. They say that they enjoy an escape from the brash glitz a couple of times a year as Oman is a real contrast to Dubai.
Yes, mine too. It’s a total contrast from Dubai or Doha.
It is the Antara that appeals most to me. It’s set in the middle of the most spectacular landscape.
It’s a wonderful property and the nearby Alila hotel is really good too -https://www.alilahotels.com/jabalakhdar
That empty beach isn’t that unusual for Oman. The Omanis don’t have a beach culture, nor is there much tourism. Most of the tourists who do go to Oman are more interested in culture than lying on a sun-lounger. I’ve been to Muscat a couple of times and had some great beach walks. Though from about 5.30 pm, locals gather on the beach for some very skilled games of football. That makes for great spectator sport.
It’s great just chilling on the beach watching locals play sport. Always a favourite pastime of mine when in Rio de Janeiro
I remember seeing one of the Beyond the Lobby programmes with Giles Coren and Monica based at the Anantara Al Jabal. The fact that it was included in that series makes you realise the quality of the place. I’ve also driven past exploring Oman’s version of the Grand Canyon and it is an extraordinary location. I’ve got to admit that I’d love to stay there.
One of the best things about A Luxury Travel Blog is that it’s not just the bloggers who show great knowledge. It’s often also those who write the comments who have a lot of valuable info to pass on. When I started reading this post I couldn’t even have told you where Oman was, now I’ve got much more idea about what the country and its finest hotels have to offer.
I’ve not been to Oman but the impression that I get from these images is of space and freedom. I have been to Dubai and over Christmas and New Year it was so crowded. We struggled to find a spot on the beach. From these pictures it doesn’t look as if it’s into high rise either. This sort of calm take on the Arab World is more what I’m looking for in a warm weather Winter holiday.
It’s a very different experience in Oman and much more authentically Arabian than Dubai and far less built up.
