Life on the luxury island of Kuredu

We’ve visited the Maldives as a family many times but we have always chosen different Islands to visit each time we go – until we found Kuredu. Nestled in the heart of the Maldives, Kuredu Island Resort beckons travellers with promises of turquoise waters, pristine beaches, and a haven of serenity. In this comprehensive exploration, I embark on a virtual journey to unveil the magic of staying at Kuredu, from its beautiful accommodations and diverse dining experiences to the myriad of activities that await on this tropical paradise.

Kuredu Island Resort transcends being merely a destination; it’s a meticulously crafted experience tailored for travellers in pursuit of the perfect fusion of luxury and natural beauty. As a sprawling family island, Kuredu is expansive, boasting the distinction of being home to one of the Maldives’ rare golf courses, albeit a quaint 3-hole course. The moment you set foot on the island, a serene ambiance embraces you, and the inviting azure waters of the Indian Ocean extend a heartfelt welcome.

Upon arrival at Velana International Airport, the journey to Kuredu begins with a scenic seaplane transfer, offering breathtaking aerial views of the Maldivian atolls. Top Tip: Buy a Sim card from the airport before you fly so you have mobile data. There are two phone shops to the left of the the airport entrance.

The moment you set foot on Kuredu, the friendly and attentive staff extend a warm Maldivian welcome, setting the tone for an unforgettable stay. You’ll be greeted by a small collection of the team playing drums as you walk towards reception. The island’s lush vegetation, coupled with the soothing sounds of the ocean, creates an instant sense of relaxation. The check in is a little slow but very relaxed while you sip away at a tropical drink (or full coconut) handed to you at reception. If your room is ready and you have signed the paperwork, you can amble your way over to the room escorted by one of the friendly staff.

Kuredu Island Resort presents a range of accommodations designed to cater to diverse preferences, from beachfront villas to overwater bungalows, each providing a unique and luxurious escape.

The beach villas (the option we went for on both our trips), nestled along the pristine shoreline, offer a perfect blend of tropical charm and modern comfort. With direct access to the white sandy beaches, these villas provide a private oasis where the sound of the waves lulls you into tranquility. For those seeking the epitome of luxury, the overwater bungalows at Kuredu deliver an unmatched experience. Suspended above the crystal-clear waters, these spacious accommodations boast private sundecks, allowing guests to soak in the breathtaking sunsets and vibrant marine life beneath. Taking exclusivity to the next level, Kuredu’s private pool villas offer a secluded retreat with a personal infinity pool overlooking the ocean. These opulent villas redefine tropical luxury, providing an intimate setting for romantic getaways or serene relaxation.

Kuredu Island Resort is a gastronomic haven, boasting a diverse range of dining options that cater to every palate, from international flavors to local Maldivian delicacies. Bonthi, the resort’s main restaurant, serves a delectable array of international cuisine in a buffet-style setting. From breakfast to dinner, guests can indulge in a culinary journey that spans continents, with themed nights offering a variety of flavors to suit all tastes. We always loved the breakfast as the chefs are on hand to cook your egg exactly the way you want it. For those craving the taste of Italy, Franco’s offers a romantic setting with an à la carte menu of authentic Italian dishes – and even Pizza!!. Set against the backdrop of the Indian Ocean, this restaurant provides a perfect ambiance for a memorable dining experience. Our favourite, “The Far East” restaurant transports guests to the vibrant streets of Asia, offering a menu inspired by the culinary traditions of China, Japan, and Thailand. Savoring sushi under the stars or indulging in flavorful stir-fries, guests embark on a gastronomic adventure that mirrors the diversity of the region. If you book early, you can enjoy the delights of a Teppanyaki where the Chef cooks your meal right there in front of you at the table. As the day transitions into the golden hues of sunset, the Sangu Sunset Bar becomes the ideal spot for a relaxed evening. Nestled on the beach, this bar offers a selection of cocktails and light bites, creating an intimate atmosphere for socialising or simply unwinding by the water’s edge.

Beyond the luxurious accommodations and delectable dining experiences, Kuredu Island Resort beckons adventurers with a plethora of activities both on land and in the surrounding waters. With its own fully equipped dive center, Prodivers Kuredu, the resort caters to both novice snorkelers and seasoned divers. Explore the vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life, or try your hand at various water sports, from windsurfing to catamaran sailing, for an adrenaline-fueled aquatic adventure. One word of warning though, the house reef is beautiful but to reach it from the beach is a little risky as there are some very protective trigger fish nesting in the sand which have chased us on both years we were there.

For those who prefer to keep their feet on solid ground, Kuredu offers a range of land activities. From beach volleyball to golf on the island’s golf course, there’s no shortage of options. Additionally, guided excursions to neighboring islands and traditional Maldivian fishing trips allow guests to immerse themselves in the local culture. After days filled with exploration and adventure, the Duniye Spa provides a sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation (Look out for free massages and vouchers which are often available). Surrounded by lush greenery, the spa offers a range of holistic treatments, ensuring a blissful escape from the everyday.

Kuredu Island Resort sets the stage for unforgettable romantic experiences, making it an idyllic destination for weddings, honeymoons, or intimate getaways. Couples seeking a dreamy beachfront wedding can exchange vows with the Indian Ocean as their backdrop. Kuredu’s wedding coordinators ensure every detail is tailored to perfection, creating a magical setting for a love-filled celebration.

For honeymooners, the resort offers special packages that include romantic dinners, spa treatments, and private excursions. With the serenity of the overwater bungalows or the secluded privacy of the private pool villas, Kuredu provides an intimate haven for newlyweds to create lasting memories.

It was great to learn that the staff at Kuredu Island Resort are committed to sustainable practices and marine conservation. From eco-friendly initiatives to educational programs, the resort actively contributes to the preservation of the Maldives’ unique ecosystem. Kuredu has implemented various eco-friendly practices, including waste reduction, energy conservation, and a commitment to sourcing local, sustainable products. The resort’s dedication to minimising its environmental footprint is evident in its efforts to protect the delicate balance of the island’s ecosystem. The fabulous Prodivers Kuredu dive center actively participates in marine conservation initiatives, such as coral planting programs and marine life monitoring. Guests have the opportunity to engage in responsible tourism by joining conservation activities and gaining insights into the importance of preserving the underwater world.

A stay at Kuredu Island Resort is not just a vacation; it’s an immersive journey into a tropical paradise that seamlessly combines luxury, adventure, and sustainability. In terms of cost, Kuredu is very reasonable and we’ve found that the best value package is to opt for the “All Inclusive”. From the moment you arrive on this Maldivian gem, the azure waters and lush landscapes envelop you in a sense of serenity and enchantment. Whether you choose to bask in the luxury of overwater bungalows, embark on thrilling water sports adventures, savor international and Maldivian flavors, or simply unwind in the spa, Kuredu offers a tailor-made experience for every traveller.

  1. A 3 hole golf course sounds about right for my standard of golf. Usually after 3 holes my game’s disintegrated and I’m in despair. I’m sure that the 4th hole will be as equally enjoyable as the legendary 19th hole, especially as you get there a lot earlier.

  2. I’m guessing that there a lot of islands making up the Maldives and as I’ve never visited any of them this sort of review is much appreciated. I still hope to get to the Maldives one day when I’ve done some reading. And when I do get there it’ll need to be good.

  3. I’ve been to the Maldives but haven’t done Kuredu which sounds even better than the ones I’ve been to.

If you haven’t done the Maldives you’re missing out on one of the great holidays.

  4. From my experience of Teppanyki it’s usually pure culinary theatre. Knives clashing like cymbals and flashing flames make it all highly dramatic. And of course you can’t get anything more freshly cooked than when it’s prepared there right before your eyes. Teppanyki is a feast for all the senses.

  5. The Top Tip is a good one. I’ve spent far too much money on roaming charges on my travel. Good advice to get a SIM card at the airport.
