The best Antarctica fly-cruises

Antarctica is a bucket-list destination and a once in a lifetime experience for so many. The White Continent is a photographer’s dream, and its beauty is almost beyond compare with the clear blue seas, snowy landscapes and icebergs creating a stunning backdrop. Wildlife is plentiful from several breeds of penguin to leopard seals, birds and of course whales including humpback and even orcas. The only way to experience Antarctica as a traveller is by cruise, sailing around the peninsula and going ashore each day to explore. One of the biggest talking points about Antarctica is the crossing of the Drake Passage, the passage of water between Cape Horn, Antarctica and the South Shetland Islands. Known as the roughest stretch of sea in the world, it is understandably a daunting prospect for many wishing to reach Antarctica and it is hard to predict what the crossing will be like. The Drake Lake, would be the ideal, with relatively waters over the two days it takes to cross this stretch of water, or the Drake Shake, which will often send your room service sliding across the cabin.

One way of eliminating the Drake Passage, is to take a fly cruise to Antarctica. This involves taking a flight from Punta Arenas in Chile out to King George Island in Antarctica, meaning that you reach Antarctica in just two hours instead of two days. This option is perfect for those short on time as it shortens the trip by up to four days, or for those nervous of the Drake Passage.

We have picked our favourite fly-cruise options for the best explorations of the Antarctic Peninsula.

  1. There are certainly some travellers’ tales circulating about crossing the notorious passage which had put me off an Antarctic cruise. I didn’t know you could escape it with a flight.

  2. You are absolutely right. Over the last decade everyone has started talking about doing an Antarctic cruise. They are on a lot of bucket lists.

  3. Having taken a good look at some of these ships on their brochures and websites, the level of luxury is impressive. They are a far cry from what Shackleton and Captain Scott’s crews sailed on.

  4. Heading towards the ice is a radical idea for me and many of my generation. Our childhood holidays were all about heading south for the sun, not heading south for the snow.

It’s a whole new mindset to and I’m beginning to see the appeal. There are some spectacular images in this post.

  5. Thank you for the advice on avoiding the Drake’s Passage Crossing. I’m not a good sailor at the best of times.

  6. These really are the adventures of a lifetime. I knew very little about these great trips before I read this post.

This could be one to look forward to in retirement. At the moment I couldn’t face all that flying and heading back into work totally zonked.

  7. I’ve heard that the info you get from the naturalists on these Antarctica voyages is way above your average cruise. It’s probably like having your very own David Attenborough on board.

  8. Silverseas have been outstanding, for service and food and everything, when I’ve sailed with them.

On that basis I’d probably go with them again if I had the pocket money to do the Antarctic. That’s the big if.

  9. That design of the AE expedition ship is certainly radical. If only Ernest Shackleton had had such design for his ship!
