The Cook Islands and New Zealand: The ultimate luxury combination
Why not merge two dream destinations into one? The Cook Islands meet New Zealand, a luxury getaway that will exceed all expectations. There has been a lot of talk about why New Zealand is such a special travel destination; let’s explore the Cook Islands, which is only a 4-hour flight from New Zealand!

The Cook Islands recently won viewers’ hearts in an episode of Travel Guides, with every guide awarding their Cook Islands experience five out of five stars. Aroha Luxury Tours is not surprised by this perfect score. This month’s episode showcased the extraordinary beauty, unique culture, and distinctive experiences that make the Cook Islands a change-your-life destination.
So, what makes the Cook Islands a five-star destination?
The ‘Travel Guides’ episode highlighted what we’ve always known, the Cook Islands offer a dreamy combination of natural beauty, culture, and leisure. Each island provides distinguishable character while preserving that special Cook Islands charm, from the crystal-clear lagoons of Aitutaki to the luxuriant mountains of Rarotonga.
Visitors can absorb themselves in traditional Polynesian culture, indulge in fresh local cuisine, snorkel the animated coral reefs, or unwind on pristine beaches where footprints in the sand might be your only company.
Must-visit destinations in the Cook Islands
The vibrant main island of Rarotonga offers a perfect introduction to life in the Cook Islands. Circle the island on the coastal road to uncover hidden beaches and local markets. Don’t miss the opportunity to hike the lush interior mountain trails with breathtaking panoramic views.

Aitutaki, often described as having the world’s most beautiful lagoon, is only a 40-minute flight from Rarotonga. The astonishing turquoise waters house small motus (islets) that can be explored on a traditional Vaka cruise. Tapuaetai, or “One Foot Island”, offers picture-perfect white sand beaches and the chance to get your passport stamped at the world’s smallest post office!
Atiu offers the more adventurous traveller a glimpse into untouched Cook Islands life. Explore limestone caves, witness rare birds in their natural habitat, and engage with local communities that maintain strong traditional practices. The locally produced coffee is a must-try for coffee connoisseurs.
Te Manga is a place for hiking enthusiasts visiting Rarotonga. You shouldn’t miss the opportunity to scale Te Manga, the highest point in the Cook Islands at 652 meters (2,139 feet) above sea level. The challenging trail rewards climbers with unparalleled views across the island and the surrounding ocean.

Thank you for this. The Cook Islands are one of those faraway places that I’ve heard of but didn’t know much about until I read this post.
You are welcome. Indeed, the Cook Islands are still an unknown destination. I love that you can have all the comforts of a tropical holiday without the large crowds and feel like you are in a remote paradise.
How do you choose between those three resort recommendations? They all look like paradise.
Personally, I’d probably go for Te Manava. Travel is all about variety and doing things differently. Some nights I’d want a private chef, then other nights I’d like to self-cater in my own time.
And I always want to self-cater for breakfast. A little fruit and cup after cup of strong black coffee is all I need.
It’s tough to choose, as it often needs to be decided on an individual basis, depending on the situation and personal preference.
If we’re going to fly to New Zealand all the way from Glasgow what’s another 4 hours to the Cook Islands? It’d be foolish not to do it.
I agree, and the good thing is that the airports are small and hassle-free, so it’s easy to transit. Plus, you have the same currency in both countries.
I’ve never snorkelled – the Cook Islands would be a good place to learn.
It’s a magical place to learn snorkelling, and the islands are perfect for snorkelling in a calm, shallow lagoon, well sheltered by barrier reefs. You will discover interesting marine life, including colourful reef fish, sea stars, and sea urchins.
Last time we visited New Zealand we toyed with the idea of a trip to the Cook Islands and decided it was a flight too far.
You’ve just made me regret that decision.
Maybe a good reason to come back down under again for another holiday.
Infinity pools, hammocks, beaches – those images really are selling the Cook Islands. What a paradise.
It truly is. I am going back there in one month. Feeling blessed, it’s so close to New Zealand.
Can’t wait to relax at the stunning Aitutaki Lagoon.

Always nice to have time to browse through A Luxury Travel Blog and to get inspired by somewhere I knew nothing about.
PS – that’s the Cook Islands. I know about New Zealand.
Amazing, it seems that some of you have just discovered it! In New Zealand, it’s been a favourite winter destination for many years. I could not ask for a better response.
What’s that old saying? A picture’s worth a thousand words.
The pictures are so good that you almost don’t need the words, though it is very nice to have the words as well.
I agree that a picture leads us to read an article! And I hope we can add interesting information with it.
That would be the New Zealand style referred to, too, especially as we have a third option: going out to one of the many coffee places nearby. We love our coffee in NZ, so we always look for Barrister Coffee.
