Seeing Dubrovnik’s defences from the sea is a great way to get a sense of why the city was built as it was. I reckon that I could cope with a little island-hopping too.
It certainly is! And visiting islands is definitely worth it – there are some lovely restaurants that you can discover.
I wouldn’t just go for any old boat trip in Venice. Yes, a gondola through the canals is good. Best of all is arriving in Venice by boat. Sailing into the middle of all that history made me quite emotional on my first visit.
Bob – I have such a romanticised notion of Venice so what you’ve said fits with that. I hadn’t thought of arriving by boat but I bet that made a lasting impression on you with that trip :)
Arriving by boat is amazing and it adds some extra glamour to a visit for sure!
I love boat trips! I’d like to go on more this year as I didn’t manage to do much last year. Totally agree with how they can give you a different perspective on a place. You’ve picked some beautiful places. I’ve not been to Italy but I do like the idea of a tour of Venice through the lagoon and canals. I think I always tend to associate Venice with boats and water so it would be silly to go there and not do it, so I hope I manage to get there one day.
Forgive my ignorance but where is Polignano a Mare? I haven’t got a clue about where it is, which coast etc etc or where the nearest big city with an airport is.
Venice is a classic boat trip. The waterways pass through some very scenic spots. Dubrovnik was one of the ports on one of the cruises I took a couple of years ago. I must admit, it was also very beautiful. I consider myself blessed indeed to be able to travel these places by boat instead of just coming in from the air.

It’s about a half hour drive down the coast from Bari, Caroline, in the southern Adriatic.
Good places, have to visit them. Venice is a beautiful place.
Venice is indeed a great start point for a boat trip. Travel from there with the Orient Express and then take a nice luxury boat :)

I’ll take the lovely city of Bruges, Belgium over the German castle and the rocks at Stonehenge.
Most definitely visit Venice while it lasts! Sea level rise is accelerating and is projected to increase another foot by 2050, according to the NOAA
