Progress report on The World

The WorldThe World is a lavish  development 4 kilometres out from Dubai’s coast, consisting of 300 man-made islands depicting a world map.   The initial phase of the project  has been  the reclamation of the land: some 320 million cubic metres of sand have been used, adding 232 kilometres of highly exclusive beachfront to the ever-growing metropolis of Dubai.   Around half of the islands – which cost anything  from $15-$45 million to purchase – are believed to have been sold. A model island to attract prospective buyers has seen some construction work on it already, but construction won’t begin in earnest on the remaining islands until 2008.   Realistcally, I wouldn’t expect many to be moving into these new developments before 2010.

  1. The World is such a fantastic looking development. I find it hard to believe there are 300 islands though – it doesn’t look like it! It’s also hard to get a sense of scale when looking at aerial photos. I would love to own one of these!

I wonder what extra terrestrial life would think if it arrived in the skies above Dubai – hey, they might even be impressed!
