Notorious Dutch prison transformed into luxury hotel

One of the Netherlands’ most notorious prisons has been transformed into a luxury hotel. Het Arresthuis was a prison since 1862 until its closure in 2007. It was then purchased by the Van der Valk family who own 28 hotels around the world. They went to work on converting the building’s 105 cells into 40 guest rooms offering luxuries the previous ‘guests’ would never have enjoyed, such as free WiFi, air conditioning, flat-screen TVs and room service.

The hotel’s interior undergone an incredible transformation, but certain prison-like features have been retained to give it that quirky feel. Heavy doors and window bars are included in the rates.

The hotel is approximately 50 kilometres from Dusseldorf in Germany and 160 kilometres from Amsterdam, tucked away in Roermond in the south-east corner of the Netherlands.

For €186.00 per person, you can opt for the deluxe jailbreak package for 2 nights. This including lodging in a comfortable cell, a buffet breakfast each morning, a cup of coffee or tea and a delicious piece of typical Limburg pastry, a 4-course dinner in their restaurant and use of the sauna and fitness facilities at the hotel.

And don’t worry – times have changed – when you come to leave, you will be allowed to check out.

This is brilliant! Theres a hostel with a similar premise in London called The Clink, which is inside an old courthouse. Such a cool idea!

We stayed at a prison in Boston! It was nice, I wrote all about it. I loved it. I love the Netherlands, it’s just so beautiful and unique. =)
