5 ways to indulge in London during October

Are you planning a visit to London this month? The month of October in England‘s capital city isn’t just about dressing up as a pumpkin and eating witches’ broth from a cauldron – there are some far more sophisticated pursuits on offer. Here are some of the best, from cocktail tasting to bicycle polo. London Restaurant Festival Most of October in London is primed for foodies. From the 3rd to 21st October 2013, loads of different venues will take part in this annual event, offering up special menus, events and food-inspired film nights. There are some bargains on offer at many of the city’s best restaurants. Tickets for events are best bought in advance from the website, and include a Japanese Journey through six of the capital’s best Japanese eateries, and Gourmet Odysseys, in which each course is served in a different restaurant – all washed down with Laurent Perrier Champagne, of course. Chocolate Week For one week only – 14th-20th October 2013 – the UK will play host to Chocolate Week 2013. An event designed to promote and celebrate artisan chocolate produced by top chocolatiers and chocolate companies, there will be lots going on in London in particular. A highlight will be Salon du Chocolat, held on 18th-20th October 2013 at the National Hall, Olympia. This event will host the best UK chocolate companies alongside exciting international brands, plus demonstrations, talks and hands-on workshops from the UK’s top chocolatiers, plus a catwalk show with outfits made from nothing but chocolate! Salon du Chocolat London Bicycle Film Festival The original Bicycle Film Festival began in New York and it now takes place in cities all over the world, including London from 3rd-6th October 2013. Venues include the Barbican and Hackney Downs Studios, where the opening night party will be held. It’s a must for anyone with an interest in cycling. As well as film screenings, there are cycling events each day, including a women’s track racing day at Herne Hill, a bike polo tournament at Newington Courts, and a leisurely Sunday ride starting from Chelmsford. London Cocktail Week If you’re looking for something a little less taxing, then London Cocktail Week could be the place for you. This year, it’s being held from 7th-13th October in 160 bar venues all over the city. Buy a £10 wristband in advance and then enjoy the finest cocktails for just £4 during the week itself. Tons of events are taking place, from bar tours and tutored tastings to late-night parties and movie screenings. It looks like a lot of fun. London Cocktail Week Frieze Art Fair This major event on the arty calendar is a seriously posh affair. Held in 2013 from 17th-20th October in Regent’s Park, Frieze serves up a visual feast from over 150 contemporary art galleries from around the world. It’s a very influential event which draws anyone and everyone from the art world to central London. Even if you don’t know much about modern art, it’s a fun place to be, with a sculpture garden, guided tours, talks, films and performances alongside the exhibitions.
