The most magical Selous safari camps

We talk about the Selous all the time, because it really is one of the most memorable areas of Africa one can get to easily, whilst still being completely wild and remote. The Selous has captured the hearts of many a great explorer throughout time and we’re really not surprised – it is truly magical and an area which we would like everyone to experience. A safari in the Selous is far more rounded and gives you a much better feel for the bush, and anything you do see will also be exclusively for you as there are very few camps and very few people. The guiding here is much better than in other parts of Tanzania not least because the guides have to track and use the signs of the bush to find their wildlife. From the Selous one can hop over to Zanzibar and enjoy any kind of property, from larger luxury hotels to small intimate beach lodges – there really is something for everyone – here is a little about the best Selous safari lodges: Sand Rivers Selous Sand Rivers Selous sits on a bend of the Rufiji River that is so surreal and so beautiful that you sometimes feel as if you’re in a dream. This lodge has to be seen to be believed and offers a wonderful chance to really fall in love with Tanzania. It is pretty magical and we love it there. We recently received a game viewing report from our friends at Sand Rivers about the elusive two brothers – two big male lions who have been giving the guests some wonderful sights. This amongst elephant, hippo, crocodile and other amazing game viewing makes this one of Tanzania’s top safari lodges. sand-rivers-selous-room-view Azura Selous We absolutely love Azura Selous, its luxurious with a fantastic spa and in a good area for game viewing. Azura boasts some of Africa’s biggest suites, all of which are private and exclusive. The furnishings are luxurious yet relaxing and don’t feel too smart or pretentious. There’s so much to do – walking, boats and game drives as well as a very well appointed spa which offers traditional African treatments which cannot fail to make you feel great. azura-selous-sundowner Beho Beho Beho Beho is one of the more famous of the luxury Selous safari properties and won’t disappoint. The vast suites face the sunrise and so you wake up every morning appreciating just how special this place really is. The atmosphere is of one big family and the food is gourmet. Beho Beho is natural and authentic but incredibly luxurious and offers an unrivalled chances to explore a remote region of the Selous which is unpopulated by other safari camps. beho-beho-bush-dinner Siwandu Camp Siwandu as in it’s 25th year of operation and is an exquisite location, ideally placed for the best wildlife viewing in the Selous and has access to the beautiful Lake Nzerakera and Lake Siwandu. Founded in 1988 by Charles Dobie the Selous Safari Company (now Siwandu) is one of the oldest most successful safari companies in Tanzania – and that really shows when you stay at this amazing camp, food is gourmet and the guides are fun, friendly and exceptionally knowledgeable. siwandu-camp-verandah Rose Hipwood is Managing Director of The Luxury Safari Company. 1. We stayed at Sand River Selous back in 2014 and it was magical. We also did a night of fly camping..well worth the extra cost.

  2. I returned to the Selous in 2019 after staying in Zanzibar in staying at Rufiji. Some good wildlife encounters including buffalo, lion,Kuduhartebeeste, and Colobus monkey.A fine view and sunset from the camp which has a huge baobab beside reception.I hope Selous ,in it’s new name isnt damaged too much and elephants are safer now.
