Photograph of the week: Santa Monica Muscle Beach

A young man uses the exercise rings on Santa Monica’s Muscle Beach at sunset. Located just south of Santa Monica Pier and dating from the 1930s, this is the original Muscle Beach; its more famous sibling, two miles south in Venice, was not established until the 1950s. In the past, Hollywood stars such as Kirk Douglas and Mae West have flexed their muscles here, along with former Mr Universes and internationally known bodybuilders from all over the world.

The perfect spot for people watching, Summer weekends sees Muscle Beach packed with gymnasts, body builders and acrobats, all strutting their stuff on the golden sands. An irresistible photo opportunity as the sun sets over the Pacific Ocean.
