The World Heritage Halong Bay features thousands of limestone karsts and isles in various shapes and sizes. Halong translates as ‘descending dragon’ and legend tells that this mystical seascape was created when a great dragon charged towards the coast, its flailing tail gouging out valleys and crevasses. As the creature plunged into the sea, the area filled with water leaving only the pinnacles visible.

Yes, the bext experience of mine on Halong is a sleeping overnight on this boat, with the view from the window as you can see in this photo. Just stay in bed, getting the first beams of sunrise, hearing the wave smashing to the boat, and forget any of my life troubles.
Wow Long, that does sound amazing and just up my street…lying in bed and not having to charge past the crowds to see something special!

I bet this is a great place for boat tours and hiking. Love the folk legend of the dragon. I guess that’s as good an explanation as natural limestone formation and erosion. I’ve seen photos of the emerald waters here, it really does look dream like and totally picture perfect.
