Chase the sun: Summer holidays with Avios

Summer is the season to trade your daily routine for golden beaches, buzzing streets, and sunsets that make your heart skip a beat. It’s the perfect excuse to feel the sun on your skin, wander somewhere new, and let adventure find you. Whether it’s listening to waves kiss a Caribbean shore, larking around in the pool with the kids, or getting lost in the charm of a historic city, summer invites you to slow down, laugh louder, and make memories that linger long after the season ends. Every holiday is a story waiting to be written — full of joy, discovery, and the simple magic of being alive in the moment.

But summer can be expensive, right? That’s where Avios swoop in like your personal holiday sidekick. Use your points to snag British Airways reward seats on hot routes without paying sky-high fares, or upgrade to business class for a more indulgent escape. Essentially, Avios turns a pricey summer adventure into a smarter, more rewarding experience.

Short-haul escapes: Quick trips, big fun

Sometimes it’s not about crossing continents — it’s about capturing the magic closer to home. Short-haul British Airways Avios bookings may not give you the absolute highest points-per-pound value, but they’re perfect for spur-of-the-moment escapes, family trips, or city breaks when you just need a quick recharge or change of scenery. These quick hops offer a different kind of value: convenience, spontaneity, and the sheer thrill of being somewhere new.

And yes, long-haul business class British Airways reward seats can be tricky to find in summer — high demand and millions of Avios collectors mean you’ll need some planning. Short-haul reward seats are often more accessible, giving you a head start on your summer adventures. Here are my top picks for short-haul Summer fun.

Barcelona

Barcelona is the perfect summer mix of culture, sun, and Mediterranean charm. Mornings are made for wandering the Gothic Quarter, marvelling at the Sagrada Família, or cycling along palm-lined avenues. Afternoons are for the beach: soak up the sun at Barceloneta, splash in the gentle waves, or enjoy fresh seafood at a seaside chiringuito. As evening falls, the city transforms: tapas bars spill onto cobblestone streets, rooftop terraces glow with lights, and street performers bring music and laughter to every corner. With incredible architecture, delicious food, and a lively summer atmosphere, Barcelona is a city that rewards curiosity and offers endless ways to make memories.

Quiet mornings can be spent exploring rustic villages, local markets, and serene coastal paths. The in the afternoon, go paddleboarding, sailing, or simply basking under the Mediterranean sun. When the sun sets, Ibiza’s energy shifts: world-class DJs, and lively waterfront bars create an electric summer vibe. Whether you’re chasing adventure, relaxation, or a mix of both, Ibiza promises a summer experience that’s unforgettable.

Florence & Tuscany

Florence is a cultural treasure chest, made even more magical in the summer sun. Explore the Uffizi Gallery, gaze at Michelangelo’s David, or climb to the top of the Duomo for panoramic city views. Piazza life is central to the experience: sip espresso in a sun-soaked square, watch street performers, and dine under twinkling lights at open-air trattorias. Beyond the city, the Tuscan countryside beckons with rolling vineyards, ancient hill towns, and olive groves sparkling in golden light.

It’s a region made for slow, indulgent exploration — long lunches, wine tastings, and sunset drives that feel cinematic. British Airways reward seats between London and Florence, paid using Avios: 26,000 Avios + £2 (Economy), 44,000 + £30 (Business).

Crete

Crete is a summer paradise where adventure and relaxation coexist beautifully. Spend mornings on sun-drenched beaches, swim in sapphire waters, or hike dramatic gorges and mountain trails. Afternoons are perfect for wandering historic villages, sampling fresh local cuisine, and discovering hidden ruins that whisper stories of ancient civilizations. Evenings bring a slower rhythm: sunset dinners overlooking the sea, local music drifting through tavernas, and stars emerging in an impossibly clear sky. Long-haul adventures: Go big this Summer

Summer is prime time for longer trips with family or friends. That means that demand is high, but it’s also where Avios truly shine. Especially when you book British Airways business class reward seats. This is where Avios delivers serious value versus cash fares.

Vancouver

Vancouver is the ultimate blend of city sophistication and outdoor adventure. Long, sunny summer days are perfect for exploring colourful neighbourhoods, strolling along waterfront parks, and sampling the city’s incredible food scene. Nature is always close by: hike through coastal mountains, bike along scenic trails, or kayak in the sparkling harbour. Cultural festivals, farmers’ markets, and bustling waterfront cafes add a vibrant urban twist to your trip. Bonus: flights from London Heathrow often feature Club Suite Business Class, giving you flat beds, doors, and privacy — making your journey almost as thrilling as your destination.

Antigua

Antigua is pure Caribbean bliss. Summer brings gentle trade winds, perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and sailing along endless beaches of powdery sand and turquoise waters. Explore Nelson’s Dockyard, wander colourful local markets, or hike through tropical landscapes for breath taking views. You’ll find fewer crowds in summer than winter, so you can savour Antigua’s natural beauty at your own pace. Even without the newest Club Suite on flights from London Gatwick, the island’s beaches, sunshine, and serenity make every mile travelled worth it.

Return trip Avios reward seats: 104,500 Avios + £400 (Premium Economy), 198,000 + £499 (Business).

Cancún

Cancún is where tropical adventure meets relaxation. Warm Caribbean waters invite snorkelling, diving, or lounging on sun-drenched sands. Beyond the beaches, explore Mayan ruins at Tulum or Chichén Itzá, or dive into local culture with vibrant dining and waterfront nightlife. Short summer showers rarely interrupt the fun, leaving plenty of sun for exploration. Flights are often on older Club World seats, which lack the privacy that the newer Suite offers. But considering that Cancun offers turquoise waters and endless sunshine, this is a summer escape you won’t forget.

  1. Not quite relevant to this post – but recently I met someone who had paid for his family to fly to Whistler for skiing with his Avios points.

Though that isn’t the story. He’s still got over 2 million points left in the Avios bank. I’ve heard about Avios millionaires. This is taking it to another level. Obviously he’s a globetrotter for his job.

    1. You’d be amazed at how many Avios people were able to collect during Covid, when travel was shut down and people were doing lots of online shopping. My balance was certainly boosted. That being said, I’d LOVE to be an Avios millionaire – I could do a lot with those points :-)

  2. You’ve reminded me that it’s high time that I checked to see how many Avios points that I’ve got. I could be in reach of a nice escape to the sun.

  3. Love how you’ve captured the feeling of summer as more than just a trip, it’s a mindset shift. Using Avios for short-haul hops like Barcelona feels like such a smart way to maximise spontaneous sunshine without draining the bank account.

    1. Thank you Jez! Personally, I don’t subscribe to the idea that every reward flight you book with Avios should be a long haul trip in Business to squeeze the most value from your points. That’s certainly true if you want to maximise the cash value of your points, but I prefer the idea that all Avios bookings are valuable in their own way. You’re being rewarded for your every day spend, and like you also said, a holiday is a mindset shift. Sometimes the value comes from the R&R you get with a break away.

  4. Reading about Florence and the Tuscan countryside made want to check reward availability immediately.

It brought back memories of the Uffizi and also of slow countryside evenings and great wines.

Using Avios for a favourite destination like this feels especially satisfying because you’re unlocking art, food, scenery, and history all in one trip. That almost makes you forget about the points.

I’m very good at planning how my partner could spend his points on our trips!

    1. Great to hear you’re an Avios expert Jen – regardless of who’s points they are! :-)

Yes, Florence and Tuscany are definitely on my favourites list. I’ve loved every trip we’ve taken there. Incredible places. I really enjoy the feeling of triumph I get from knowing I’ve booked seats using points, and I’ve earned those points on money I’d be spending every day anyway. If you’re someone who enjoys travel then Avios is a great way to fund your hobby :-)

  5. I like that you didn’t oversell every redemption as “maximum value.” Sometimes a 26,000 Avios return to Barcelona is as much about Gaudi, paella, sangria and sunshine rather than numbers on a spreadsheet. And football too!

  6. With the Med warming up for spring long before the chilly UK, Ibiza is ideal for a spot of warmth on a quick getaway.

  7. The pricing breakdowns are super helpful. Seeing the Avios + cash element clearly laid out makes it easier to compare options, especially for destinations like Crete where the slight bump in points could still be a bargain during peak summer.

    1. Thanks Ed! Don’t forget you can also choose to increase or reduce the Avios element of the fare once you get to booking, but I find it helpful to see a summary of expected costs. I find short haul redemptions particularly good value in the summer months, during peak travel season, because airlines typically increase cash fares and the savings of a reward seat redemption can be higher than usual.

  8. Antigua in summer is such an underrated shout. Fewer crowds plus Avios availability can be a winning combo. Antigua could be the ultimate unwind destination.

    1. Absolutely Archie, I think Antigua is underrated too. Lots of travellers opt for the more ‘popular’ Caribbean spots but there’s a lot to the island and it makes for a great fly and flop holiday.

  9. I’ve got a big business trip coming up taking in South East Asia on the way to Australia, all Business Class, which will boost my points total. Nice ideas here for making use of the points I’m accruing.

    1. You’ll have a lovely balance boost from that business trip :-) Plenty you can do with what you earn on it – I’d be planning on spending it already!
