Growing gourmet scene in Bangkok?

According to the Mail & Guardian, Bangkok is achieving a growing reputation as a centre for the gourmet lifestyle that could soon rival the likes of Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo. The city already hosted the Epicurean Masters of the World event which I blogged about earlier this year, and will host the World Gourmet Festival in September, at the Four Seasons Hotel. A return of the Gourmet Asia event also looks to be on the cards.
It’s certainly not difficult to find a great gourmet meal in Bangkok’s many upmarket restaurants. But there are some wonderful hidden gems too. Here’s a recommendation for you.
Try Al-Ferdoss, Schiller Inn, Soi 3/1, Sukhumvit, Bangkok. They offer some of the nicest Middle Eastern food we’ve had anywhere, at laughably low prices. The boss takes a personal interest in what’s being served and is very helpful in advising you on how much to order. Massive naan breads, beautiful mezze. Don’t miss the BBQd lamb! Beer comes in very large coffee mugs – but not during Ramadhan (it’s a heavily Muslim Middle East/South Asian expat area).
