8 US destinations for active travelers

When choosing a vacation destination, I tend to look for a place that is alive with activity. Athletes are very focused on fitness, and I am no different.  This is why, when I travel, I make sure IÂ’m able to squeeze some much needed exercise into the holiday.  These are what I consider to be some of the best places in the US to take an active vacation. Sonoma The region that produces some of the best wine grapes in the world is also one of the best cycling destinations.  Sonoma roads are catered to riders of any level, so feel free to ride along at your own pace in one of my favorite places in the world and sip on some of the most renowned flavorful wines. Sonoma   Zion ThereÂ’s only one way I can describe Zion: breathtaking.  Located just a few hours from the crazy lights of Las Vegas, Zion is the epitome of natureÂ’s beauty.  Hike through the canyons and camp in one of natureÂ’s playgrounds.  Zion offers you all the serenity youÂ’d need to recharge and reboot a tired mind. Zion Colorado Colorado is known as one of the USAÂ’s most active destinations, and one that I love for many reasons. It has skiing, riding, hiking and climbing and itÂ’s where I suffered through some of the toughest yet memorable rides of my life.  With the high altitude and the Olympic training center, itÂ’s no wonder why active minded people head to the Mile-High City for fun. Colorado   Boston ThereÂ’s just something about this city that feels like home, be it the city lights, the Charles River or the crazy sports fans.  Coming back to The Hub after a long vacation always feels good to me.  Known as the “Walking City”, avid runners come to enjoy the hometown meets big city feel of Boston.  Every year, thousands of runners are drawn to the hallowed ground of the historic Boston Marathon.  If youÂ’re into running, join a running club or visit Marathon Sports to hop into a running tour and see the sights on Boston by foot. Boston   Hawaii Known as the birthplace of the Ironman triathlon World Championships, Kona draws in a great number of active travelers – both amateur and professional alike.  The vast roads, amazing ever-changing scenery and multitude of active options like hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, and cycling down the famed Queen K highway make it an active travelerÂ’s ideal vacation. Hawaii Oregon The place that birthed the famous Nike brand has to be a great spot for active people.  Oregon is considered one of the best places in the world for outdoor enthusiasts, and for good reason.  The state has an array of year-round activities from hiking to skiing to cycling and more. For an active individual, Oregon has it all. Oregon   Cape Cod If youÂ’re looking for the perfect New England getaway, Nantucket is for you.  The quaint destination has quiet beaches, great bike rides and amazing seafood.  After a day spent water skiing or riding, thereÂ’s nothing quite like tucking in to an amazing, fresh caught lobster roll.  And to top it off, itÂ’s located less than an hour’s flight from the hustle and bustle of Boston. Cape Cod   Maine Maine is yet another great place for active-minded people.  ThereÂ’s something about being in Maine that encourages you to step outside and enjoy nature at its finest.  Whether itÂ’s hiking through Acadia National Park, mountain biking through the stunning woods, or sitting down for a fresh and healthy seafood meal, Acadia Maine is a top destination for active travelers. My wife and I did a lot of hiking in Sequoia, King Canyon and Yosemite National Parks last year. We both like to play hard during the day but come back to a nice establishment in the evening.
