Our top 3 experiences in the NWT

It goes without saying that a trip to the Northwest Territories is all about the opportunity for some outdoor adventure. Home to swathes of spectacular wilderness that’s hiding some incredible wildlife, this off-the-grid destination is the place to go if you’re keen to experience a real connection with nature, away from the crowds. From fishing with the locals to camping out in the wilderness, here are some of the best ways to experience this wonderful territory.

Catch a view of the Northern Lights

Whether it’s whilst racing across the wilderness on a dog sled or relaxing by a camp fire at Aurora Village that you spot this natural phenomenon, few things can beat the ecstatic feeling of watching the Northern Lights dance across the sky. What’s more, since the Northwest Territories are located directly under the aurora oval, your chances of ticking this experience off your bucket list is pretty high.

Fish with locals

There’s no better way to sample local life than venturing out with a team of resident fishermen. And as the Northwest Territories boast some of the best freshwater fishing lakes in the world; this is an outdoor experience you won’t forget in a hurry. Learn from the experts and see if you can catch the famed Northern Pike – but be warned, they can weigh up to 40 pounds.

Camp in Wood Buffalo National Park

Spending a night at Wood Buffalo National Park is an ideal way to feel close to nature. As the largest national park in Canada, you can expect to encounter some of the most enchanting creatures in the world. Look out for Wood Bison and the planet’s last remaining migratory flock of Whooping Cranes before camping out beneath the stars – just don’t forget the camera.
