Best afternoon teas in London

The best places in London to enjoy a sumptuous afternoon tea have been named in the Afternoon Tea Awards 2023, sponsored by AfternoonTea.co.uk.

Three main category awards were presented:

Best Traditional Afternoon Tea – Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park
Best Contemporary Afternoon Tea – The Carlton Tower Jumeirah
Best Themed Afternoon Tea – The Berkeley

A team of independent judges looked at all aspects of the afternoon tea experience, from making a booking, to paying the bill, with a strong focus on the presentation and service. An ‘Award of Excellence’ was also presented to 14 venues that the judges considered to have delivered the highest standards in Afternoon Tea service.

Keith Newton, managing director of AfternoonTea.co.uk, said: “Reading through the judges’ feedback, I was reminded of the intricacies of the whole Afternoon Tea experience. There are so many different elements to manage – presentation, service and customer expectations. These awards recognise the efforts that go into making the magic happen.”

The Rosebery at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park – Best Traditional Afternoon Tea

The judges said: “This was everything afternoon tea should be. Great service, great food, great tea, in an amazing setting. It’s actually incredibly hard to find anything to fault, or an improvement to suggest!”

A Tribute To Nature at The Carlton Tower Jumeirah – Best Contemporary Afternoon Tea

The judges said: “This is a fine dining experience; I felt the staff wanted to ensure we had a magical time and a luxury experience. There are many places in London that offer traditional Afternoon Tea, but this is unique and takes your experience to the next level.”

Prêt-à-Portea at The Berkeley – Best Themed Afternoon Tea

The judges said: “‘The skill and artistry of everything served was impeccable. One of the best Afternoon Teas I’ve ever been to. The whole afternoon was a delight and the attention to detail really set it apart.”

  1. I love meeting with friends for an afternoon tea in London. There are no so many places offering afternoon tea that it’s become hard to sort the wheat from the chaff so this is a much appreciated piece.

  2. Afternoon tea has come on so much in recent years that the stands are now almost works of art in their own right.

  3. Until recently I wasn’t much of an afternoon tea fan as it was all too sweet for me. I’ve really enjoyed the move towards some savoury options too.

  4. As I’ve travelled a lot in Asia I like it when they have an Asian theme. It could interesting to see what the Orchid Room at the Pan Pacific has to offer.
