The Innsbruck Welcome Card: Everything you need to know

One thing I haven’t mentioned much from our trip to Innsbruck is the convenience of the city’s Welcome Card scheme. Travelling in a city – particularly a new city – can be a little daunting sometimes, especially if you’re unfamiliar with how everything operates. When exploring any city, it’s a much more pleasant experience if the travel is stress-free. Thankfully, transport in Innsbruck and beyond runs like clockwork and with exceptional efficiency. But it doesn’t stop there. In Innsbruck, they believe that whether you are visiting key landmarks around the city or heading into the mountains, navigating transport logistics should be the last thing on your mind, and this is where the Welcome Card comes in.

Provided free of charge by partner accommodation to guests staying two nights or more, this guest card functions as a key to the city and surrounding region, granting complimentary public transport, free cable car rides, and discounts across local attractions, plus plenty more.

Instead of trying to figure out how to get from A to B, and what ticket you need, you’re instead able to focus more on things you want to see and do, and worry less about how to get there, safe in the knowledge that you’re covered.

Innsbruck Welcome Card partner accommodation

During our family trip to Tyrol, we stayed at Hotel Das Innsbruck — a luxury hotel perfectly set along the Inn River in the heart of the city. Built directly on the foundations of Innsbruck’s historical city wall, it offers the ultimate combination of Tyrolean heritage, contemporary luxury, and central convenience.

Because Hotel Das Innsbruck is a participating partner hotel in the Welcome Card scheme, receiving our cards was completely effortless. Upon check-in, our Welcome Cards were issued to us, immediately opening up the entire VVT public transit system (Verkehrsverbund Tirol, the regional authority that manages transport across the entire state of Tyrol) and the local IVB network (the Innsbrucker Verkehrsbetriebe, responsible for operating the local inner-city public transport). Having transit passes provided right at check-in allowed us to step out of the hotel lobby and immediately immerse ourselves in our daily adventures without ever needing to worry about purchasing single-use tickets or navigating fare zones.

The simplest way to confirm if your accommodation is included is by searching the official Innsbruck Tourism partner accommodation directory or looking for the “Welcome Card Partner” badge when booking. Alternatively, you can contact your hotel directly prior to arrival; many participating properties, including Hotel Das Innsbruck, can even issue your digital Welcome Card in advance via email so you can use public transit from the moment you land or reach the station.

How we used the Innsbruck Welcome Card

Having comprehensive public transport access allowed us to easily connect our stay in Innsbruck’s historic core with several unforgettable day excursions into the surrounding mountains.

To experience the spectacular high-Alpine lakes on the Drei-Seen-Runde near Kühtai, we relied on the regional bus transport out into the Sellrain Valley, allowing us to travel smoothly from the city centre directly to high-elevation trailheads. Similarly, when we headed out into the dramatic limestone peaks of Axamer Lizum, we took advantage of the convenient regional bus connections that whisk visitors straight from the urban center into the heart of the mountain landscape.

For our day out at Mutteralm, we boarded the local tram to Mutters, enjoying a scenic ride through the countryside before arriving at the base station.

Once there, our Welcome Card Plus allowed us to board the Muttereralmbahn cable car, taking us up the mountain where we enjoyed mountain carting and exploring the alpine trails overlooking the Inn Valley.

What else you can do with the Innsbruck Welcome Card

Even beyond the specific routes and excursions we took, the Welcome Card offers an extensive array of possibilities for travelers looking to experience the broader Innsbruck region.

Culture enthusiasts can use the integrated public transit network to visit historic sites and village centers across the valley, or take advantage of discounted entry to attractions such as the iconic Bergisel Ski Jump, the Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Wattens, or regional museums.

Outdoor lovers can join complimentary guided hiking tours organized by the Tyrolean Alpine Club, ranging from gentle meadow walks to challenging summit ascents, or explore winter snowshoeing trails when visiting in season. Golfers enjoy reduced green fees at nearby courses like Innsbruck-Igls and Mieming, while families can access local swimming pools and bathing lakes, such as Lake Natterer See or the Axams Leisure Centre, for a relaxing day by the water.

The Innsbruck Welcome Card vs. Welcome Card Plus

The card is structured into tiers based on the duration of your stay at a participating accommodation. The standard Welcome Card (for stays of 2 nights or more) covers all public transportation, guided hiking programmes, family activities, and swimming pools, along with selected discounts. For stays of 3 nights or more, guests receive the Welcome Card Plus, which includes all standard benefits alongside four complimentary return cable car rides on selected mountain lifts during the summer season.

  1. The Welcome Card must be such a convenient way to explore Innsbruck without constantly worrying about tickets and transport. Having it ready at check-in must make the first day of a trip much more relaxed, especially when travelling with family.

What is so good for Innsbruck is being able to go from the city centre to the mountains so easily. The combination of trams, buses and cable cars makes it easy to explore both the historic city and the surrounding Alpine scenery.
