Cell phones on flights – yay or nay?

Cell phoneThe use of mobile phones on planes has long  been put on hold  because it was feared that it compromised a plane’s own radio communications and safety. More recently, however, airlines have begun testing the use of mobile phones on flights. Personally, I’m not a big fan of that prospect – I’d sooner travel in peace and quiet than have to listen to one half of someone’s conversation, but maybe the same isn’t felt by business travellers.   If you’re like me, you might want to  add yourself to  The Daily Telegraph petition which has already amassed around 3,500 ‘signatures’ at the time of writing. Regardless of which camp you fall in, please  post your opinion and reason(s)  by clicking on  the comments.

  1. Couldn’t agree more! The thought of aircraft jabbering to the incessant sound of “I’m on the plane” fills me with dread. Add to that the multitude of ringtones, the person next to you fidgeting with text messages, and the inane and pointless chit-chat, and air travel is set to become even more uncomfortable if this goes ahead.

  2. The idea of people yakking incessantly on their mobile phones also fills me with dread. But I’m fed up of all the prohibitions on airlines these days.

I smoke, but I’m not allowed to do that on a plane any more. Therefore I would be in favour of banning anything and everything else that’s a nuisance to others. Banning young children from some flights would be first on my list, then phones, then Mr Bean movies…

  3. I agree with you kay having to listen to people chatting on a phone all through the flight is an awful nightmare. it is bad enough on trains but on a plane where there is no escape is painful. I am however thankful that smoking is no longer allowed on flights – no offence. the kids idea is interesting – some are fine and others are just a nightmare.

  4. Definitely would be an annoyance especially when people want to sleep on planes. It can pretty annoying on short train journeys when someone is on their phone. I am all for inflight wi-fi though!

  5. Could be very annoying if you happen to be stuck next to someone who is constantly on their phone and speaking loudly whilst you try and snooze.

  6. This would be awful! It drives me mad on trains, there is always somebody who thinks you want to know what they are having for dinner! You’re even more restricted on a flight as you can’t move seats so I just think there would be a lot of irritated people on board. Maybe they should install a phone booth at the rear of the plane ha ha!

I agree that wi-fi would be great.
