3 unexpected honeymoon destinations

When it comes to luxurious honeymoons, there are the tried and true standards: destinations like Maui, St. Barts and Santorini that will never go out of style. But what if you’re looking for something a little off the beaten track? Here are three surprisingly romantic destinations you may not have considered.

Wine and dine in Barcelona

With it party-loving reputation, this Mediterranean city may seem better matched for single travelers and fun-loving groups of friends. Beyond its exciting nightlife and beaches however, couples will quickly discover that vibrant Barcelona offers more than its fair share of romance. Spend a lazy afternoon sunbathing and people watching by the Ciutadella Park fountains, or sample local flavors at La Boqueria Market’s food stalls. Late at night there’s nothing better than strolling through the narrow lamp-lit streets of the Gothic Quarter, where cozy tapas bars and the sounds of Spanish music are never far away. While in town, take advantage of Barcelona’s seaside location with a private sunset sail for two, and toast your journey with a glass of the region’s signature cava.

Get away to Virgin Gorda

After the hustle and bustle of the big day, serene Virgin Gorda offers the perfect escape and some much needed rest and relaxation. Accessible only via larger Caribbean hubs such as St. Martin or Puerto Rico, this less-traveled British Virgin Island is happily free of the large all-inclusive resorts you’ll find elsewhere. Instead you’ll find romantic villas and cottages dotting the island’s shores, some with private swimming pools. Even the excursions on Virgin Gorda are suitably relaxing – spend a day snorkeling around The Baths, the island’s imposing shoreline boulders, or enjoy a gourmet picnic for two. In the mood for some outdoor adventure? Take in the views with a nature trail hike or test your skills at SUP (stand-up paddleboarding).

Get up close to nature on Kauai

Often overlooked in favor of its better known neighbors Maui and Big Island, Kauai is the ideal honeymoon destination for nature lovers. Known as Hawaii’s ‘Garden Isle’, this lush island is home to 50 miles of beaches, with great snorkeling spots nearby. For awe-inspiring views, head up to the lookout at Waimea Canyon – this 14-mile geological wonder is Hawaii’s answer to the Grand Canyon. Equally impressive are the twin Wailua Falls, the perfect romantic backdrop to your honeymoon pics! Of course no trip to Hawaii would be complete without a colorful sunset – Poipu Beach and its Spouting Horn blowhole offer some of the most dramatic spots to watch the show.

I plan to visit Kauai for my honeymoon this May. I’ve been to the island once before and it’s a truly beautiful place. NaPali coast is breathtaking which is the image you used in the post. I can’t wait to go back.

Barcelona is definitely one of the most romantic cities in Europe (if not in the world). If you’re in a couple, get ready for some excitement! And if you’re single, you might just find the love of your life!
