Mhondoro Game Lodge opens in Welgevonden Game Reserve, South Africa
Mhondoro Game Lodge in Welgevonden Game Reserve in Limpopo, South Africa. Bringing high-end design and exceptional game viewing to the malaria-free, Big 5 reserve, Mhondoro is a ground-breaking safari experience less than three-hours drive from Johannesburg.
Mhondoro is the first South African lodge to offer intimate encounters with wildlife from an underground waterhole hide. Following a 65-metre-long concrete tunnel that connects to the main lodge, the hide gives visitors total safety as they get up close to elephants and other animals having a drink or a frolic. Welgevonden Game Reserve stretches across 35 000 hectares in the Waterberg and features a large white rhino population. Guided walks with trained game rangers are offered by special arrangement, providing an excellent chance of spotting these precious, endangered beasts in their natural environment.
A custom-built Star Deck brings the African night sky to life in the evenings, giving visitors a glimpse at the Milky Way and the lower hemispheres famous Southern Cross constellation. Other luxury features include heated swimming pools for year-round swimming and a massage suite with an outdoor spa deck and bath.
Designed by celebrated Dutch interior designer Myriam Vogel, who co-owns the lodge with her husband Frank, Mhondoro is a fusion of local African design and European influences. The lodge is limited to 20 guests, housed in deluxe, executive and family suites. A romantic honeymoon suite is also available, complete with private pool and viewing deck.
The ultimate in luxury and privacy, Mhondoro Villa is perfect for families or groups of friends travelling together. Villa guests have access to exclusive amenities including a personal chef, butler and housekeeping staff, as well as a private yoga room, gym and heated pool. A game-viewing safari vehicle with personal ranger is also provided. For family travellers, Mhondoro offers an indoor play room and protected outdoor play area where children can enjoy themselves throughout the day. Special childrens activities can also be arranged.
Mhondoro is a mere 2h 45-minute drive from Johannesburgs OR Tambo International Airport, or a 50-minute flight to the reserves air strip. All-inclusive rates start at ZAR 3,700 (approximately GBP 180) per person sharing per night (low season 1 May to 30 August 2016) and include all meals and selected drinks, twice-daily game drives/walks, reserve entrance fees and scheduled transfers from Welgevonden main gate.
